DVD (1 Layer, 2 Side)

The DVD (1 layer, 2 side), also known as a double-sided single-layer DVD, was designed to increase storage capacity by using both sides of the disc. Each side held a single data layer of 4.7 gigabytes, giving a combined total of 9.4 GB of storage. Unlike dual-layer discs, which stored extra data on one side, these discs required users to physically flip the disc over to access the additional side. While this design doubled the available storage compared to a standard single-sided DVD, it was less convenient for playback since switching sides interrupted viewing. Despite this drawback, double-sided DVDs were used in the late 1990s and early 2000s for long movies, extended versions of films, and special editions that included bonus content. They were also useful for storing large amounts of software or data in professional environments. However, because both sides of the disc had to remain writable and readable, there was no surface area available for a label, making them harder to handle without damaging. Over time, dual-layer single-sided DVDs and Blu-ray discs became more popular due to their ease of use, but the DVD (1 layer, 2 side) remains a notable step in the evolution of optical storage.

Jaz 2GB

The Jaz 2GB was a removable storage disk introduced by Iomega in the late 1990s as part of its Jaz drive series. Designed to offer high-capacity storage compared to floppy disks, it provided 2 gigabytes of space, which was significant for its time. The Jaz 2GB disks were primarily used for backing up important files, storing large multimedia content, and transferring data between computers. These disks were compatible with Jaz drives, which connected via SCSI or IDE interfaces, depending on the model. Unlike floppy disks, Jaz disks were hard disk-based, which allowed faster read and write speeds and greater durability. However, they were more expensive and less portable than floppy disks, limiting their use to professional and business environments. Over time, as CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and USB flash drives became more affordable and convenient, Jaz disks gradually lost popularity. Despite this, Jaz 2GB disks played an important role in the evolution of portable storage, bridging the gap between low-capacity floppy disks and higher-capacity optical and solid-state media. Collectors and vintage computing enthusiasts still value Jaz disks today for their historical significance and their role in early data storage technology.
