The DVD (2 layer, 1 side), also known as a single-sided dual-layer DVD, was developed to expand the storage capacity of standard DVDs without changing their physical size. By using two data layers on one side of the disc, it could hold up to 8.5 gigabytes of data, nearly double the 4.7 GB capacity of a single-layer DVD.
